Directions to where you and I belong | arnoldo colibrí

arnoldo garcía: abuelito in blue
(9"x16 'on fat paper, June 2025

Go south

To winter from the borders

Go north to flee to freedom

Go east to meet the grandfather of all grandfathers

Go west, sleep, to rest, to be safe, among the only humans who make life as part of their life

Go to the center to place your head on the pillow made of dirt and the bones of our ancestors

Go up into the stars and constellations

Go down into the DNA of the human soul

If you are human

If you are life

You are a nomad

You are movement to keep the natural world alive

You are where you belong.

Ransom for Six Sky

On the day
8 Ben 16 Kayab
Six Sky of Río Azul
was buried.

Most likely during the year 450

Then in the late 20th Century
Looters took
the vessel
from her grave
Now Six Sky sits under a glass display
(anxiously awaiting liberation)
at the Detroit Institute of the Arts.
The looters kept no record,
but the people will always remember

In December 1985
140 small pieces of
gold
jade
obsidian
and
turquoise
were taken from
the National Museum of Anthropology
in Mexico City | Tenochtitlán
the thieves
sent
a message:
these priceless precious stones
are being held for ransom

Now, the Maya Zapatistas are paying the ransom
freeing Indigenous past and present
from the neo-liberal kidnappers, the grave-baron-land-robbers,
the military industrial complex of generals, soldiers, paramilitaries,
police, battalions, secret police, political parties, non-profits, politicians
and toastmasters of capital.

Six Sky
has been
resurrected,
scattered
between Detroit and Tenochtitlán
Seattle, Oakland, Matamoros,
Chicago, Toledo, New York
Organized into a community army
armed with the colors of the earth
their weapons are our ancestors
who have secretly taken over the underworld
putting ski-masks on the sun and moon

Gestating flesh and blood onto the skeletons of our dreamers
.
In the butterfly of our women
flutter two banners, two flags, their lips chanting
we shall dream
we shall win
we shall birth
we shall love
we shall shatter
we shall clench our hearts
we shall cry in community
we shall sing off the face of the enemy
we shall batter the helmeted soldier,
laugh at his bayonet
we shall stop the bullets, the bombs, the fires
And the new people
that Six Sky dreamt
in her deep sleep
in the year 450
emerge, rise, fly, speak with an earthen tongue
when we will swallow the sky
to become pregnant with clouds, rain, butterflies, milpas, babies,
chidlren-ancestors, who slept in our arms
and made thunder rise
from the maize, the frijol, the women, the men,
the elders, the still-born, the invaders, the raptors,
who remembered then:
Six Sky was resurrected in the sixth sun….

Café solidario: Brew Zapatista coffee, drink solidarity without borders

Everyday acts of living and surviving, as simple as sipping a cup of coffee, can unfold as acts of solidarity with other people who are in struggle and movement for justice and the land.

How can a cup of coffee chip away at the capitalist social-economic and political structures that have our communities — the natural world, communities of color, Indigenous women and Indigenous people, migrant workers, undocumented children, women, men and elders, queer people and African Americas — struggling under siege?

I am not talking about just any old coffee. I am talking about Zapatista-grown and harvested coffee. Zapatista coffee is produced by an autonomous community, a people standing with self-determination, on their own lands and relying on their own shoulders.

Café Sin Fronteras

I am inviting you to a cup of solidarity coffee to break down the economic barriers imposed by neoliberal capitalism. My invitation means purchasing a bag or two of Zapatista coffee that has been roasted and packaged by Oakland's own Sin Fronteras Coffee.

"It has been a wonderful challenge to stay open and still provide coffee to folks. The special thing about our coffee work, however, is that we empower folks to make their local purchase have a global impact," the owners Rocío and José wrote in an email.

Order your Zapatista coffee on-line

Pick-up your Zapatista coffee freshly roasted by Sin Fronteras Coffee at:
Akat Café Kalli

1601 2nd Avenue

Oakland, CA

Take it from someone who has been drinking coffee since I was five years old: This coffee is bold, delicious and good any time of the day.

Sin Fronteras Coffee describes the taste:
"A medium roast coffee with notes of apple and cinnamon. This coffee is sourced from Zapatista Communities in Chiapas, Mexico."

Sign up for the Sin Fronteras Coffee newsletter here:

Waffles & Zapatismo

If you want to join me for a cup of Zapatista coffee sometime, join the Chiapas Support Committee in a Saturday session of "Waffles & Zapatismo" where we share consciousness-raising Zapatista-inspired liberation ideas and practices AND good tasting Zapatista coffee.

Check out the CSC website for information and opportunities to take action for solidarity and justice:

Soy del otro lado | I am from the other side

Soy del otro lado
del lado bravo
del lado tuyo
del lado izquierdo
donde tengo el nido
para tus abrazos
Soy del otro lado
donde los muros
son las sombras
que persiguen
a los policías
que defienden
a los tiranos del mercado
Y el sol está
a nuestro lado
reaparecen
Soy del otro lado
del lado tuyo...

I am from the other side

I am from the other side
from the side of the Bravo
from your side
from the left side
where I have a nest
for your arms
I am from the other side
where the walls
are shadows
that chase down
the police
that defend
the tyrants of the markers
And the sun is
on our side
on the side of the earth
on the side of tears with smiles
on the side of the of the full and empty moon
on the side that is fuel for the stars
on the side where we are whole
on the side that divides the beasts
taming them with our light
on the side that holds us
against the rage of money
I am from that side=
with its six directions and seven spaces
where our embrace open up skies and doors
where our cries threaten borders
and the women give us their backs
to carry us and to survive
From the side where our disappeared
reappear
I am from the other side
from your side ...

We are all Picassos

We are all Picassos.
Todas y todos somos picassos.
My DNA is digital
my besos are analogue
I spin through space
two eyes here
two mouths there
the mother displaced, distorted, missing in Michigan
the father invisible, drowned,
dismembered on the canvas of fertile grandmothers
I arrived piece by piece across the migrant spectrum of soul
I will be buried and the earth will be whole again and again
My fate is twisted, a twister, a storm of tenderness
My days are here with you
My nights become DNA,
I spin and float reassemble
myself in your bodies
I ghost other worlds
parallel soul parking
fitting carefully between two bodies
My love is DNA
my hate is analogue
Borderless not wireless
My head leans against the head of Coalicue
My ears are pounded by the drumming
of wars plummeting through my skin
We are all artists
our tongues the brush
our veins the palette of colors
the rio bravo pleading to jump tracks
and wash herself of the maquiladora blood
Picasso made flesh offerings for our eyes to see
Guadalupe buried our placenta in her cries
Today is the day I will eat prickly pears with lemon and chile
smile against the sun
know that everything and everyone I love
will burst from my pores and my senses will make clouds
free the rain from the prison of pipes, asphalt and dams
Two or three more world wars
Ten, twenty, thirty revolutions
Where we disarm the men with guns and pigmentation
we'll get it right
we'll figure out how to be together
dance and not damn ourselves together
Wind
Water
Land
Our bodies return whole to the spiderweb,
gently feed the cosmos...

[Poema 23] El humano que no fue fotografiado

caballo loco
caballo loco
la locura de tu libertad
la locura de tu caballo indomitable
no hay
ni nunca habrá
una cámara
fotográfica
digital
de filme
para capturar a tu espíritu de insistencia
la tecnología de la sociedad industrial
no puede contigo
surges y re-surges
insurrecto
enmascarado en Chiapas
vendedor ambulante de frutas en Nueva York
en las montañas de Cuba
en los arrozales vietnamitas
encarcelado con Peltier
piscando uvas en el valle imperial
en la Lacandona
tienes tus hermanas y hermanos dispersos
todos caballos locos
un movimiento de caballos locos
galapando sobre lluvias y ciudades
con una bandera de relámpagos
no hay cámara
fotográfica
digital
de filme
ni prisión dentro de una prisión
para caputarar a tu cuerpo
para encarcelar a tu espíritu rojo

caballo loco,
te veo borracho en las calles
cara hinchada
cabello sucio
enredado en saliva, sudor, lodo y amargura

caballo loco

rogabas
que me tomes una fotografía
te pago munchos pesos
y luego pedías disculpas
porque andabas borracho
y tu papá te había dejado
y no sabías cuando retornarías
ni cuando llegarías a tu casa
Me es urgente, me rogabas
con esa garganta de sueños
ahogados en las aguas del olvido
caballo loco
no quería tomarte tu fotografía
por respeto a tu polvo
y viento de insistencias
me es urgente, gritaba tu espíritu
y clic!
no te capturé/imagen de semilla
explosiva
te tomé la foto
para cargar tu espíritu
una arma más
de mi resistencia
ahora me es urgente
relevarte
para que nosotros juntos podamos
rebelarnos

caballo loco
caballo loco
la historia te traiciona

caballo loco
caballo loco
caballo instantáneo
locura delirante e indomable
relinche de la revelación
caballo adomador de humanos
locura para humanizar a la humanidad
caballo sol
caballlo luna
caballo tierra
locura, luz y labios
para crear gritos, relinchos de la naturaleza
caballo loco de las sombras
con soles bajo tus pies voladores
explotas lomas negras
que gestan pueblos y estrellas
te desempuño de heridas asesinas
te sano con llamaradas
te alzo con el tambor
eres la sonrisa comuna de la resistencia

caballo loco
caballo loco
no en blanco y negro
sí en carne y hueso
no en papel-espejo
sí en piel-ternura
no en archivo
sí en la lengua
no en referencia histórica
sí caminando en auroras
no antepasado
sí entre nosotras y nosotros
sí cabello larguísimo
donde viven todas las generaciones
en el viento de tus manos
caballo loco de la liberación natural
