The story of our name

I was born

in the mouth

of the Río Bravo

the untamable river

the wild roots of the crystaline waters

that traverse our bodies

I was born

in the mouth

of the Río Bravo

as the monarchs arrived

carrying the harvest on their wings,

a mosaic

of squash, maize and frijol

I was born

from the purépecha’s misty pine tree covered volcanic thrust

commingling with the palestinian wound

My grandmother

manuela, healer, seed carrier

My grandfather

caretaker of earth

struggled

with their eldest daughter

Coatlicue

on what was happening

to her body

I was born and

given as a gift

to Coatlicue’s parents

to raise me

and I became

El viejo, el viejito

Arnoldo

named after Coatlicue’s lover’s best friend

and not after the place we go

to pray, Tamaulipas

Coatlicue disappeared

and I kept her

in the caverns

of my body

I grew up

with her eleven brothers and sisters

and named my daughters

after my grandparents

the women who who labor

to ensure we do not become machines

My elders

sat across from me

sharing a meal

we were

each other’s mirros

of the past, present, future

I followed Abuelita

(in ceremony)

who taught me

how to walk

and to always offer water

to anyone

who came to our door

Abuelita said

You must treat everyone you meet with reverence and respect

You never know if that person at the door or that passes by on your path

is a holy being

And if you don’t know what to do

always answer

always respond

with you dignity.

My grandfather’s body vibrated with the dust of horizon and plants

He could find any place we migrated to work

His prayer beads

were the constellations

He would pull back his head way back as in ecstasy

under

the star-filled

night

as he prayed

In his left hand his beads

Inn his right hand the constellations

He loved Manuela

and worked

every

single

day

of his life

so that she could do her work

of healing . . .

We are all picassos

We are all Picassos.
Todas y todos somos picassos.
My DNA is digital
my besos are analogue
I spin through space
two eyes here
two mouths there
the mother displaced, distorted, missing in Michigan
the father invisible, drowned,
dismembered on the canvas of fertile grandmothers

I arrived piece by piece across the migrant spectrum of soul
I will be buried and the earth will be whole again and again
My fate is twisted, a twister, a storm of tenderness
My days are here with you
My nights become DNA,
I spin and float reassemble
myself in your bodies
I ghost other worlds
parallel soul parking
fitting carefully between two bodies

My love is DNA
my hate is analogue
Borderless not wireless
My head leans against the head of Coatlicue
My ears are pounded by the drumming
of wars plummeting through my skin

We are all artists
our tongues the brush
our veins the palette of colors
the rio bravo pleading to jump tracks
and wash herself of the maquiladora blood
Picasso made flesh offerings for our eyes to see
Guadalupe buried our placenta in her cries

Today is the day I will eat prickly pears with lemon and chile
smile against the sun
know that everything and everyone I love
will burst from my pores and my senses will make clouds
free the rain from the prison of pipes, asphalt and dams
Two or three more world wars
Ten, twenty, thirty revolutions
Where we disarm the men with guns and pigmentation
we'll get it right
we'll figure out how to be together
dance and not damn ourselves together
Wind
Water
Land
Our bodies return whole to the spiderweb,
gently feed the cosmos...

what is lost | arnoldo garcía

I cannot take back
what I lost
what I lost
now belongs to another
If I take back
what I lost
I will have to take it away
from another I
I cannot take back
what I lost
what I lost
is only found in my memory
a body that needs another
to be found
to be whole
to be un-lost
without having to take back
from another
who is just
another I
Another I
who is lost
And cannot take me back
without taking away from me
what is lost...

When I die | Day 9 Poetry Month

Add to Technorati Favorites

 When I die
I will be so dead
You will have to invent a fake life
to match my real death
I will be such a big death
that everyone will enjoy
the musical composition
of my decomposing body of work,
inhaling the stench of my improvisations
My blues will finally be about being down, out and dead.
Laying there in my coffin
please know I got dead drunk on tequila shots of formaldehyde
salt and lime my corpse
and make video called "The Dead Gone Wild"
When I die
all the flowers will cry
out of happiness
Now that I am gone
They'll sing:
He will never bother us again!
he cannot torture us anymore with his shitty clichés!
Everyone who is important will show up with crocodiles
cause they will not be able to fake their own tears
Anyone who knew me
will praise my name to the skies with the left hand
while with the right hand they will hold their nose
Oh when I die I will be so dead
no one will really know what to do with me
Bury me?
Cremate me?
Ask the pope to canonize me?
Build a mausoleum specifically for poets
So they can visit my Leninesque physiqueness,
preserving me for eternity to ward off limericks and capitalists?
Maybe just let me rot under a highway underpass?
I don't know what to suggest or expect
When you're dead, you're dead and self-determination takes over
but please:
no accolades,
no praises,
no homages,
no illegitimate children or polyamourists
to denounce me for lack of providing orgasms
or who may want to lay claim to my literary real estates
When I die
maybe sprinkle a bit of mud on your shoes,
maybe wipe my slate clean,
maybe laugh at me for all my stupid mistakes,
maybe remember the nights we spent together,
anything that makes me human will do.
When I am dead I will still be waiting for you
Arms open
Deep sighing
Faking my own life so I can't be dead
Well, really dead but still true...

palpita, da martillazos, es incansable
solo se cansa de ser ignorado
solo se cansa de no tener revoluciones
el corazón del corazón
es la revolución humana.
el corazón es corazón
en todos lados
en todas en todos
los humanos

el corazón del corazón
destruye soledades

ah que corazón tan bravo

frente a la guerra
frente a las odiseas
el corazón nos da corazón
para sobrevivir y vivir de corazón

The human quest
To capture light
The human touch
Destroys all light
The human light-trap
Dusk to dusk
Switching places
Ditching hope
At the muncipal trash dump.
Turning off the light
In the fumes of rotting humanity.
The human light switch
Kills the light bulb
And believes he controls the sun.
The human light trap
Is a barbed-wired concentration lamp
Where human mixtery
Perishes for the soiled sun.

germinate
in my brain
transplanting the seeds
onto freshly tilled blank paper
ink, typewriter, laptop, printer, blogged
perfectly bound into the spine of a book
each page becomes a rib
each book a life
each life a leaning tower of humanity
each humanity a page from the biggest bang
then we are scattered fractals
that pile up, disarraying matter,
the catastrophe of beauty

my erotic machinery, my lips
My hands, my eyes, my nose, my lips, my tongue, my skin, my hips, the crevices in my body where night gestates, every pore, every drop of saliva, every cry that gently pulls apart the tear-ducts of my orgasms, a constellation and a combustion, a convergence and contradiction, this machine made of flesh, bones, 10 liters of blood, a heart that pumps harder with tenderness, a kilometer or two of veins, muscles, sinewy synaptic lightning, thunders into my face, my lips moisten, boom!
Un beso,
a kiss,

My five senses are network
telegraphing caresses
connecting blood, muscle, belly, heartbeat
germinating the DNA of humanity’s long march, longer memory,
the first kiss
el primer beso
over and over
electrifying the soviets
inking the constitution
making revolutions live in the body
the explosion of my lips anywhere on your body

Love song to my body.
My body is made by your body.
My body will make your five senses
multiply to the Nth power.
My body is
an anthem to gentleness,
an ode to the sensual and the sensuous
My body expires alongside my lovers
Resurrection, insurrection, no directions, no instructions,
My body is virgin forest, utopia for the utopians,
I discover new senses in each pore, each pore a memory of the big bang
My heart rests in a lunar crater, pumping liquid light
My body electromagnet for un-licentious lust:
I caress my face with yours
I sculpt my nipples between thumb and the other four fingers
Inviting you to invite me into my own body
I am quark transmitting into the space of our bodies
I run my tongue over my lips tasting my besos:
I carry the first kiss of humanity
When Lucy kissed my first father
And my first mother introduced me to my first body at her breasts
I made contact with my body with my lips
Diego Rivera is my shadow
Frida Kahlo waits for me in Baltimore
My body bursts over the music of your tongue
Mayakovsky scribbled my body jingle in two words: I love.
You are my parallel body, my world, my sun-scream…
