New poetry chapbook! Poets against War & Racism | Poetas contra la guerra y el racismo

Order your copies of Poets against War & Racism here.

Here's the first in a series of chapbooks that we will be publishing to read and work together to raise our voices and ink (real & virtual) against the calamaties of capitalism: war and racism.

At the core of our words is the belief that we can create the world, small and big, horizontal and communal, where we are safe to be ourselves, free and self-determined.

To get there we have to create and practice the new language.

So here is a small offering by five poets who are against war & racism and for deep community and justice.

Get one for yourself and get two or more for your friends and families.

What remains after us?

Poetry is what remains
after we make love,
after we march for justice,
after we make little revolutions against big injustices,
after we paint and color the canvasses of our skin,
when we make peace with the rage of the system,
when we kiss
... the hands of our elders,
.. the mouth of our lovers,
.. the nose of the new born

Poetry is what remains
after we hold hands or smile or talk and listen to one another,
when our hands glance each other's shadows,
when the moon is full and we are empty.

Poetry is what remains
after we have lived
many suns together.

Come make poetry with us
Poetry that swallows the wind to make us rain
Poetry that touches our faces with the hands of the dust
Poetry that makes craters in the soul of your heart
Poetry that defies bullets and the shadows of mourning
Poetry made by the hands and the eyes of rainbow warriors who struggle to make springtime the only season of our dreams

Poetry that buries the war dead with the words and cries of our elders who never gave up
Poetry that makes love to overthrow capitalism and its war machinery of wage labor, mining, fossil fuel and paved over acquifers
Poetry that is the flower and bread of organizing our utopias and seeds
Poetry that is on the lips of the loved ones,
.. the first kiss of humanity,
.. the first kiss of revolutions,
.. the kiss of our ancestors and newborn.

Poetry that says never again to war and hate, extraction and exploitation of our deepest life gestating in the earth herself.
Our dreams do not fit in
voting urns
banks
Our dreams fit
in our hearts and word of peace, sisterhood and justice...

Primero de Mayo | May 1 | the international movement

Add to Technorati Favorites

The working class
That international beast of capitalist burden
Used to count the light, the wrinkled skin of stars and cosmos
Now we’re trapped in the industrial smokestack's web of disaster
We used to be Indians, most of us at least.
We donned silk-screened t-shirts with the crocodile trademark over our huipiles
We interspersed the language of money in the crust of our souls,
Banning the sun from the count of human time.

We are in trouble:
Are we workers or are we humans
Are we sons and daughters of the land or is the land dispossessed of the dispossessed
Are we on street-corners waiting for work or are we on the cosmic pilgrimage
to honor Lucy, our first mother, returning the first kiss with the first humanity to be

Veinte girasoles
Veinte fuerzas

my body
is the broadcasting machine
communicating waves
of color
dsl eyes
analog ancestors
waiting to be
clicked on
digitalized
sent careening
into the electronic ocean
a digital root
a dust meme
a viral rage for justice

my body is my art
my blood acrylic, oil, pastel,
ink;
My bones,
a knife to etch, scratch, brush, dab, splat,
push into
press against
the canvas of you

language is what you do
with a weapon system called
my tongue, my lungs
my brain, my memories
my lives
of migration...

[Poema 18] How we got this sick

In Boston a white man
attacks two women
because they have their heads covered
with a veil, a hijab
He punches, kicks, curses their wombs
She does not defend herself
she stand
taking all the blows
for us
The white man leaves his rage on her body

A dark skinned male has set off the bombs.
A dark skinned male has ordered the drone attacks.
Dark skinned males are on the war's front-lines, in prison, unemployed, guilty.
The epicenter of the explosionsfrom Al-Mutanabbi to Boylston Street
From cultural centers and bookstores to the marathon's finish line?
Men with guns, bombs, nukes & IEDs, with domination on their minds
War widows, war orphans, war veterans, the war President, war economies, war schools, war children, war, war, war, war.
Car-bombs, suicide bombers, B-52 bombers, Drone missiles,
We are all now hibakusha.
Strontium 90 in the hummingbird's flurry of wings
Uranium depleted peoples, the radiation of hate
How will our story end?
What story will we tell,
who will hear us?
What scale
of tragedy
of loss
of anguish
of implosion
do you need
so that you will want
to hear and tell our story
to share the scars
to heal the wounded fists
to acknowledge our disappeared
to unbury our ancestors?
A tsunami, a Ciudad Juárez,
an Oakland drive-by,
a drone attack,
the boys and men imprisoned in Guantánamo,
a sister with blood cancer,
a flattened Haiti,
a woman beaten by a man every thirty seconds,
a mother with her children living in the street,
an unpublished writer-dishwasher,
a day laborer who speaks neither english nor spanish,
an abandoned baby,
a burned out barrio,
a hunger for company in the solitude of poverty,
begging in front of bookstores,
a student in debt for life,
a man left alone who no one will touch,
a Cuban rafter,
an indigenous migrant farm-worker,
a war widow,
a junkie,
a loner in the middle of everyone?
A dream for a people without dreams
from a dream without people?
Books not bombs?
Marathons not massacres?
Let the drones be drones again,
pollinating plants and humans
How many times do we say:
An Iraqi, a Pakistani, an Afghanistani, a Mexican, a Muslim, a Christian, a Buddhist, a Maya, a migrant, a woman's
life
is worth the same
cries the same
has the same family
has the same desires and ecstasies
Europe does not have to die for América Indígena to live
Blood for oil.
The violence
amputates the arms of violinists and herbalists
tears up our languages into oblivion
dissects screams
leaves a crater on my tongue
muting the pleasures of our lips

The best anti-war medicine:
The land belongs to herself,
We belong to the land
where our bones are standing, armed, at attention
a gleaming silvery army of ruptured laughter

We are all Baghdad, Birmingham, Boston...

We have more cities, towns, streets, plazas in waiting
waiting for their crater,
their dismembered,
their wailing
their rebirth,
their blast-off for the stars
peaceful cafés,
homes for everyone,
schools that are schools
freedom that is freedom
Languages that speak,
that do not growl threats & carries them out.

[poema 10] Deseos en medio de la guerra de la naturaleza

Quiero
una
frontera
que
una
a todas
las fronteras
atravesando
electricidades
espacios
vientos
y mares
Una frontera
de vida
de comunidades
de polvo
de pueblos
en las velas
de nuestros pulmones
del tamaño
del
cósmos fronterizo
Brújulas
para
llegar
a nuestros territorios
donde
cruzan
y entrecruzan
fronteras
en una jornada
de esperanzas
de rabias
Tus brazos
son mi brújula
norte y sur
atravesamos ternuras
las travesuras
de nuestra alegrías traviesas
las travesuras
de nuestras quejas
que desbaratan al sistema
perdido en su búsqueda y destrucción
de El Dorado, utopía de los insaciables

*

Podré amar a un país
como a mi mujer?
Podré amar a mi mujer
como a un país?
Ella mezcla
tierras y deseos
en su cuerpo de ríos
Ella
es
una
utopía
donde
vive
la esperanza de espinas
y zurcos llenos de sangre
su cintura
el arco
con flechas
para encajarnos
en su cuerpo
defendernos del desastre
y vivirás.

*

la revolución emplumada
la revolución informe
la revolución sin forma dictatorial
la revolución ésta
es agua
es vida
es lodo
chocolate espiritual
para ingestar a la naturaleza
el polvo de todas y todos
nuestros antepasados.
She is water, rain, liquid, cloud, mud
spiritual xocolatl
to ingest the natural world
the dust of all our ancestors
laying about in whirlwinds
revolución sin proletariado
revolución contra todas las clases sociales
revolución contra la pobreza y la riqueza
recolución contra la enfermemdad y las prisiones
de los libres, contra su salud y sonrisa
revolución
luz
líquida
enlodada
que llueve
ríos
mares
lodos
olas que vuelan en nubes,
tormentas, truenos,
relámpagos
y tempestades
huracanes
tornados serpientes
que se evaporan
una revolución reciclándose
que ocupa nuestros cuerpos
que ahoga niños descuidados
revolución sin espina dorsal floja
adicta a las verdades de las plantas
y los jardines humanos

The revolution evaporates
storms heaven infinitely
and the dust of revolutionaries
(fertile flesh offerings)
revolución del viento
revolución del polvo
revolución del agua
y se completa
y se desvanece
mi grito
stabs the sun in her eyes
trips the moon
takes over the clouds

*

The end.

The world war advances
on all fronts
mountain-tops camouflaged in snow
to blend in with the clouds
the clouds transport their armies
sending advance guerrilla units
the wind sends in microbursting
sharpshooters
tornadoes drop sky-side bombs
hurricanes unleash massive wave assaults
this is the natural world war
gravityis her the four-star general and commander-in-chief
in the middle of battles
she coordinates, plans, paralyzes the human army
She wages natural world wars
her implacable army, an earthquake away
to our total disruption
When her blood flows
watch out!
she will get revenge
leveling everyone and thing
in her path
World's war: who will survive?

The rivers dry up
the water-wells commit suicide
letting mud and mold take over its crystal bellies
The clouds disappear
into a coordinated ambush
with the sun
the natural world turns against humanity
earthquakes, tsunamis, sink holes, grass
and forest fires
self-immolating for the next big-bang
the natural world war advancing on all fronts
their goal: to drive humans, us, into the sea of space
where the sea will
drown us
capsize our boats
turn our souls upside down, belly up
capsizing humanity,
the last Titanic.

My land | arno!do garcia

Add to Technorati Favorites

My country
is the smallest country
in the world.
my country fits
inside one-hundredth
of one molecule
in a touch between one strand of DNA
my country
has room
for everyone
every European
every Chinese
every Mexican
every African
every Indian
every Asian Pacific Islander
every queer
every human
every nomad
of the earth
every two-legged, four-legged,
crawling, burrowing, winged-being
fits in my country.
Everyone is welcome, everyone
I'll happily give you
my country
as long as you promise
to take care of her
to let everyone
live in her in peace
in garbled flags
in borders without pigment
borders with human pores
to breath freely
to live breathing
My country is everyone, is everywhere
my country is small
bothers no one
invades no one
drones no one
doesn't stamp your passport
doesn't ask for identity documents
my country lets you be
lets you exist as yourself
lets you determine who you are
my country has no borders
other than those of humanity to humanity
my country has
no armies
no prisons
no police
no homeless
no one suffers
at the hands of other humans
my country is
all the colors,
the clash of colors,
the contrast,
the muddy blends,
the stark yellows,
the pink sunrises,
the red of your tongue
my country fits
in your veins
fits in the bat of an eye
welcomes you to our bodily paradise
you can have my country, if you want
it's already yours
walk slowly take your time
my country is in no rush
peace and freedom take their time
rest a bit, get up, work hard, party
in my country
even the dead
get a turn to dance
every now and then.
There are no regrets
there is only life
and its mortal pleasures
in my country.
Oh! in my country
you would be ideal
you would fit right in
like you always lived there
like your ancestors had been buried there
as a matter of fact
I would encourage you
to bury your ancestors here...
to bring your ancestors here
to my country
to bury them here
take care of them here
take care of our country
where everyone
where every living being
fits
my country is so small
that everyone fits.
And in one of her pores
fit all the suns and moon,
my country, you and me...
